The WWW needs some special attention

Last Monday, 12 March 2018, was a good day to think about the World Wide Web, and that it is a precious resource worth to be protected. In an open letter, published here, Sir Tim Berners-Lee used the day to remind us of some troubling tendencies: For example, the web can be weaponized, as most recent developments show.

Some think we cannot rely on a handful of big players to help us out (see the report on the Guardian).

In Switzerland, some think we can (e.g. here: "Keine Regulierung auf Vorrat").

Sir Tim Berners-Lee puts it differently:

He further uses his open letter to call for action: "Today, I want to challenge us all to have greater ambitions for the web. I want the web to reflect our hopes and fulfil our dreams, rather than magnify our fears and deepen our divisions. ... Let’s assemble the brightest minds from business, technology, government, civil society, the arts and academia to tackle the threats to the web’s future."

We agree. This is the moment to think about what to do. We believe in liberty and would not hastily accept or promote restrictive regulation. But we do not believe in laissez-faire, either. We believe options are available. And we are engaged in a conversation to find the best possible approaches, e.g. in the context of Swiss Data Alliance
